Field log by Diego Fuentes, Patagonia and Atacama logistics planner with our studio since 2018. Roads, altitudes, and prices checked for the 2026 season.
Why this route

The Atacama rewards a hub-and-spoke plan: five nights in one hotel in San Pedro at 2,400 m, with one long day above 4,000 m and the rest below 3,000 m. In 2026 a comfortable three-star double in San Pedro lists at 90 to 140 USD with breakfast, and the standard excursion menu runs 40 to 70 USD per half day and 90 to 130 USD for full-day altiplano tours, park entries included. Distances are short but altitudes swing hard: El Tatio sits at 4,320 m, the Miscanti lagoon at 4,120 m, and the town oasis at 2,400 m. Doing the high days back to back is the common mistake, and our five-day order spaces them with a rest morning between.
San Pedro sits 100 km southeast of the Calama airport, a 90-minute transfer at 25 to 35 USD per person in shared vans. The 2026 park and reserve entries total roughly 60 USD across five days if bought separately, which is why we bundle them into tour prices wherever the operator allows. Night skies are the free attraction: the town observatory sessions list at 35 to 45 USD, and on moonless nights the Milky Way reads clearly from any hotel patio. Rain falls mainly in January and February, the altiplano winter, when some lagoon roads close; March through November is stable.

The log: five days from San Pedro
One hotel, five spokes. High-altitude days are separated by rest mornings throughout.
Day 1 - Calama landing and San Pedro, 2,400 m
We meet your morning flight at Calama, load bags, and drive 100 km southeast to San Pedro de Atacama in 90 minutes. Check-in is by 13:00, lunch on Caracoles street runs 12 to 18 USD, and the afternoon is deliberately empty: one walk to the Pukara de Quitor fortress, 3 km return, entry 5 USD. Evening briefing at 18:00 covers altitude rules for the week: water, no alcohol on high days, and coca tea on request. Dinner early; the geysers pickup is at 04:30.
Day 2 - El Tatio geysers, 4,320 m
The van rolls at 04:30 for the 90 km climb to El Tatio, arriving 06:30 at 4,320 m as the 80 fumaroles steam hardest in minus 5 C air. Entry is 15 USD, breakfast is served on site by 08:00, and the optional thermal pool soak runs 30 minutes before the crowds arrive. Midday we descend via the village of Machuca, 4,000 m, with llama empanadas at 3 USD each, and reach San Pedro by 13:00. The afternoon is rest at the hotel pool with no excursions by rule, and the evening is free in town.
Day 3 - Valley of the Moon and stargazing
This is the sleep-in day: breakfast at leisure, then the morning free for the town museum, entry 8 USD, and gear checks. At 15:30 we enter the Valley of the Moon, 13 km west, entry 12 USD, for the salt caves, the amphitheater, and the sunset viewpoint over the Cordillera de la Sal. Midday heat peaks near 28 C in the valley while San Pedro sits at 24 C. After dinner, the 21:00 observatory session runs 2 hours with 10 telescopes at 40 USD, and bed follows by 23:30.
Day 4 - Altiplano lagoons, 4,120 m
Full-day departure at 07:00 southeast: 170 km to the Miscanti and Miniques lagoons at 4,120 m, entry 10 USD, with flamingo counts often above 200 birds between the two shores. Midday lunch is a box meal at the Socaire viewpoint, then the descent through the Toconao valley with a stop at the Jerez canyon pools. We return by 17:30 after 10 hours and 350 km total. Evening is a quiet dinner; this is the second high day, and hydration matters more than sightseeing.
Day 5 - Salar de Atacama and Pukara detail
Morning is the flamingo reserve at Chaxa lagoon, 60 km south, entry 8 USD, where the 2 km boardwalk loop passes three flamingo species feeding at 30 m. Midday returns to town for lunch and a rest hour, then the afternoon covers the Tulor ruins and the Quitor fortress in detail, 3 hours total. Evening briefing at 18:00 settles the departure transfer and reviews the week's photos with our local guide. Farewell dinner on Caracoles street, about 25 USD per person.
Day 6 - Departure via Calama
Shared van at 08:00 for the 90-minute run to Calama airport, timed for flights after 11:00. Midday is buffer: coffee airside, about 5 USD, and our driver confirms the boarding gate rush that Calama does well. Total 2026 excursion spend for the five days lands near 380 to 450 USD per person excluding the hotel. We close the file with a feedback call within a week.
If you go
Desert logistics are simple but strict. The points below cover the 2026 season as we run it.
- Separate the two 4,000 m days with a rest morning; altitude symptoms peak on day two of stacked highs.
- Budget 90 to 140 USD per hotel night and 380 to 450 USD in excursions for the five-day set.
- Carry sun protection for 28 C midday and a down layer for minus 5 C geyser dawns on the same trip.
- Book the observatory for a moonless night; the 40 USD session is twice as good without moonlight.
- Drink 3 liters of water on high days and skip alcohol the night before El Tatio and the lagoons.
- Confirm Calama flights after 11:00 on departure day; the 90-minute transfer plus airport time needs the margin.
We begin with a walk-through call, fix the hotel and excursion order, pre-book the high-demand observatory night, and brief you on arrival. Our logistics line monitors every pickup daily.
