Chapada Diamantina: A Six-Day Trek Log

By Rosa QuispeSeptember 5, 20254 min read

Field log by Rosa Quispe, Peru and Bolivia planner who walks our Brazil trek seasons. Trails and prices checked for 2026.

Why this route

Cliff edge above a green valley

The Pati Valley trek is South America's best-supported wilderness walk: 5 days and 70 km through a valley with no road access, sleeping in resident houses with beds, showers, and cooked meals. In 2026 the guided 5-day trek lists at 650 to 850 USD per person with a licensed guide, porters for food, all house stays, and meals, plus the Lencois staging nights at 60 to 90 USD. Daily stages run 10 to 18 km with 400 to 800 m of gain across quartzite table mountains at 1,000 to 1,400 m. Water is the constant companion: the Cachoeirao waterfall drops 280 m after rain, and river crossings number six on the longest day.

We stage in Lencois town, 400 km inland from Salvador, reached by the 1-hour flight plus 2-hour drive or the 6-hour direct bus at 30 USD. The trek season runs April through September, when the waterfalls hold volume and the trails dry between showers. Guides are mandatory in the national park sectors, and our teams carry satellite communicators since cell signal dies 5 km into the valley. This trek suits fit walkers who want remoteness with beds: no tents, no cooking duty, just walking and swimming.

The log: Lencois to the Pati and back

Six dated entries from staging to the return. Distances and swim stops logged daily.

Day 1 - Lencois staging, 400 m

We meet your arrival in Lencois town by midday and check in at a pousada, doubles 60 to 90 USD with breakfast and pool. The afternoon is the 2 km Ribeirao do Meio slide walk, natural rock waterslides 20 minutes from town, free entry. Evening briefing at 18:00 covers the 5-day pack: 8 kg personal limit, river sandals, and the house-stay etiquette. Dinner is moqueca, 15 USD, and bed by 21:30.

Day 2 - Into the valley, 14 km

The 07:00 transfer covers 30 km to the trailhead, and the morning climbs 600 m over 7 km to the Gerais do Vieira viewpoint. Midday is lunch at the first house stay, beans, rice, and chicken for 12 walkers, then the afternoon descends 7 km into the Pati floor past the Prefeito waterfall swim stop, 30 minutes. We reach the house by 16:00 after 14 km. Evening is dinner at 19:00, hammocks, and the valley silence.

Day 3 - Cachoeirao day, 16 km

Morning covers 8 km up the valley to the Cachoeirao viewpoint, where the 280 m falls drop in three ribbons after rain. Midday is the swim in the upper pools, 45 minutes in 20 C water, and lunch back at the house. Afternoon is the 8 km return loop past the Calixto waterfall, 100 m, with a second swim. Total 16 km in 8 hours, closing with the house dinner and the route talk for the long day ahead.

Day 4 - The long traverse, 18 km

The longest day: 18 km in 9 hours from the Pati floor over the 1,400 m shoulder to the second valley system, with six river crossings up to knee depth. Morning starts at 06:30 with headlamps for the first hour, midday lunch is trail food at the divide, and the afternoon descent passes the 90 m Buracao viewpoint from above. We reach the far house by 16:30. Evening is the tired-happy dinner, foot care, and bed by 20:30.

Day 5 - Waterfalls exit, 12 km

Morning descends 6 km to the Fumacinha waterfall base, 100 m, with the 45-minute swim in the green pool. Midday climbs out 6 km to the roadhead, 400 m of gain in the heat, reaching the van by 14:00. Afternoon drives 2 hours back to Lencois for showers, laundry, and the celebration dinner, 20 USD. Total trek distance is 70 km over five walking days, and the evening brings the certificate and photo exchange.

Day 6 - Lencois buffer and departure

Morning is free for the town artisan street, leather and gemstone pieces at 10 to 40 USD, and a final swim. Midday buses leave for Salvador, 6 hours at 30 USD, or connections to the airport. Total 2026 trek spend lands near 650 to 850 USD guided plus staging nights. We close with a feedback call within a week.

If you go

Remoteness with beds still needs fitness. The 2026 notes below are our rules.

  • Train for 18 km days with 800 m of gain; day four decides the trek, not day two.
  • Budget 650 to 850 USD for the guided 5-day trek with houses and meals, plus staging nights.
  • Pack river sandals and quick-dry everything; six crossings on day four soak boots early.
  • Travel April to September for waterfall volume and drying trails between showers.
  • Carry cash in reais for the houses, beers at 3 USD, and guide tips of 30 to 50 USD for the trek.
  • Keep day six clear in Lencois; tired legs and laundry need the buffer before the bus.
  • Break in your boots on 10 km walks at home; new footwear fails on day four, never on day one.

We start with a walk-through call, check your trek fitness honestly, lock the guide and house stays, and brief you in Lencois. Our line tracks the team by satellite daily.
