Chiloe Churches and Coast: An Island Route

By Diego FuentesJuly 28, 20264 min read

Field log by Diego Fuentes, Patagonia and Atacama logistics planner who runs our southern Chile seasons. Ferries and prices checked for 2026.

Why this route

Shingled wooden church under grey sky

Chiloe pairs two rarities within 180 km: 16 wooden churches from the 18th century, three of them UNESCO-listed, and the PuNihuil penguin colony, the only mixed Humboldt and Magellanic nesting site. In 2026 a 4-day self-drive loop with rental car lists at 700 to 950 USD per person with guesthouses, or 1,000 to 1,300 USD with a private driver-guide. The island sits 1,100 km south of Santiago, reached by the 90-minute flight to Puerto Montt plus the 30-minute ferry, and distances on the island run 30 to 90 minutes between stops. Weather is maritime, 10 to 18 C with rain in any month, which makes the wooden-shingle architecture and the potato cuisine part of the experience rather than background.

We order the loop north to south: Ancud and the penguins first, Castro and the churches second, the southern villages last. Guesthouses list at 60 to 90 USD with breakfast, curanto meals at 15 USD, and the penguin boat at 25 USD. The churches open on caretaker schedules, roughly 10:00 to 17:00, so midday belongs to interiors and mornings to coasts. Four days covers the island without rushing; three days forces a choice between penguins and the south.

The log: ferry to the south end

Six dated entries from the Pargua ferry to Quellon. Church hours and tide notes kept daily.

Day 1 - Puerto Montt to Ancud

We meet your flight at Puerto Montt by 11:00 and drive 60 km to the Pargua ferry, 30-minute crossing at 5 USD per car. Midday is lunch in Ancud, curanto at 15 USD, and the afternoon covers the San Antonio fort, entry 3 USD, plus the town museum, 2 hours on mythology. Check-in at an Ancud guesthouse, 60 to 90 USD. Evening briefing covers the penguin-boat tides for tomorrow.

Day 2 - PuNihuil penguins, 60 km

The 09:00 drive covers 30 km west to PuNihuil, and the boat leaves at 10:30, 25 USD, 45 minutes around the islets with Humboldt and Magellanic penguins at 10 m. Midday returns for lunch, then the afternoon walks the 3 km PuNihuil beach and the Chepu river viewpoint. Evening is back in Ancud for the market dinner, 10 USD. Penguin counts peak October through March at 5,000 pairs.

Day 3 - Ancud to Castro, 90 km

Morning is the 90 km drive south to Castro in 90 minutes, with a stop at the Dalcahue church, 30 minutes, one of the three UNESCO interiors. Midday is Castro lunch and the palafito stilt-house viewpoints, 2 km on foot. Afternoon covers the Castro church interior, 45 minutes, and the craft market, wool pieces at 10 to 30 USD. Check-in in Castro runs 65 to 95 USD, and the evening is free on the waterfront.

Day 4 - Southern villages loop, 150 km

The 08:00 loop runs 150 km through Chonchi, the museum church, and the Huillinco lake viewpoint, lunch 10 USD in a village cocineria. Midday reaches the Detif and Vilupulli churches, caretaker openings 30 minutes each. Afternoon returns via the coastal road with the sunset over the gulf. Total driving runs 5 hours with 4 hours of sightseeing, and the evening briefing covers the return ferry timing.

Day 5 - Castro detail and Achao option

Morning option is the 2-hour ferry to Achao on Quinchao island, 8 USD return, for the oldest church interior, 45 minutes. Midday is the Castro market lunch and last wool shopping. Afternoon drives 90 km north to Ancud for the final night near the ferry. Evening is the farewell curanto, 15 USD, and packing.

Day 6 - Ferry and flight out

The 08:00 ferry crosses 30 minutes to Pargua, then the 60 km drive to Puerto Montt airport by 11:00 for midday flights. Total 2026 loop spend lands near 700 to 950 USD self-drive or 1,000 to 1,300 USD with driver-guide. We close with a feedback call within a week.

If you go

Island order and tides decide this route. The 2026 notes below hold the plan.

  • Run north to south: penguins first, Castro second, southern villages last, ferries decide the rest.
  • Budget 700 to 950 USD self-drive or 1,000 to 1,300 USD with driver-guide for four days.
  • Book penguin boats October to March at 25 USD; counts peak at 5,000 pairs in these months.
  • Plan church visits 10:00 to 17:00 around caretaker hours; mornings belong to the coasts.
  • Pack rain layers in every month; maritime showers arrive fast and leave the same way.
  • Keep day six clear until the midday flight; the ferry plus 60 km needs a three-hour margin.
  • Fill the tank in Castro or Ancud; southern village stations close early and run short on weekends.

We start with a walk-through call, draft the island order, book the guesthouses and boats, and brief you in Puerto Montt. Our line tracks every ferry and pickup daily.
