Rapa Nui in Four Days: An Island Log

By Rosa QuispeOctober 6, 20254 min read

Field log by Lucia Herrera, Galapagos and Amazon naturalist who covers our Pacific island seasons. Sites and prices checked for 2026.

Why this route

Moai heads at golden backlight

Rapa Nui sits 3,700 km west of mainland Chile, and four days is the minimum that covers the three site groups without rushing: the east-coast moai platforms, the Rano Kau crater and Orongo village, and the Anakena beach plus inland quarries. In 2026 the LATAM flight from Santiago lists at 450 to 650 USD return on the five weekly departures, and the national park entry is 80 USD, checked at the airport and valid for the stay. Mid-range hotels in Hanga Roa list at 110 to 160 USD with breakfast, and full-day guided tours run 90 to 130 USD per person. The island is 24 km long and 12 km wide, with one paved ring road, so every site lies within 30 minutes of town.

We schedule the sunrise at Ahu Tongariki, the 15-moai platform, on the clearest forecast morning, because the 06:30 light on the statues is the single sight that justifies the airfare. Park rules in 2026 require a certified guide for the Rano Kau and Rano Raraku sectors, which folds neatly into two guided full days plus one free day by rental. Weather runs 18 to 25 C year-round with short showers, and the tapati festival in February doubles hotel demand. Four days also absorbs the island's flight delays, which cancel roughly one sailing in twenty in winter.

The log: four days on the island

Five dated entries from touchdown to departure. Sunrise and sunset slots are booked by forecast.

Day 1 - Arrival and Hanga Roa, sea level

We meet the 5-hour flight from Santiago around midday with flower garlands, the local greeting, and transfer 10 minutes to Hanga Roa town. Check-in at a partner hotel, 110 to 160 USD, then the afternoon walks the 2 km coastal path to Ahu Tahai for the 20:00 sunset behind the moai. Evening briefing at 18:00 covers park rules: stay on marked paths, no touching the statues, guide required in two sectors. Dinner is tuna and ceviche, about 22 USD.

Day 2 - East coast: Tongariki sunrise to Anakena

Pickup at 06:00 for the 20 km drive to Ahu Tongariki, arriving 06:30 as the sun rises behind the 15 moai, the tallest at 9 m. Midday continues to Rano Raraku quarry, entry with guide, where 397 unfinished statues lie in the crater slopes across a 2 km trail. Afternoon is the Te Pito Kura navel stone and the white sand of Anakena beach, 2 hours of swim time in 22 C water. Return by 18:00 after 8 hours and 60 km total.

Day 3 - Rano Kau crater and Orongo

Morning is the 15 km drive to the Rano Kau crater rim, 1.6 km across, with the lake 200 m below and three islets offshore. Midday covers Orongo village, 53 stone houses of the birdman cult, entry with guide, 90 minutes on the cliff edge. Afternoon is the Vinapu platforms with their fitted-stone masonry, 1 hour, then the Ana Kai Tangata cave paintings, 45 minutes. Evening is the Kari Kari dance show option, 35 USD, 90 minutes of music and story.

Day 4 - Quarry detail and free afternoon

Morning returns to Rano Raraku for the exterior trail, 3 km, with the kneeling moai and the travel-weary statues missed on day two. Midday is lunch in town and the Father Sebastian Englert museum, entry 5 USD, 1 hour on settlement history. Afternoon options run by rental: bikes at 15 USD, diving at 120 USD for two tanks, or the Ovahe beach cove. Evening briefing settles the departure transfer and the park-exit check.

Day 5 - Departure to Santiago

The midday flight allows a final 08:00 walk to Ahu Tahai in morning light, 2 km, and a last empanada breakfast at 6 USD. Transfer is 10 minutes to the airstrip, with the park entry re-checked at boarding. Total 2026 island spend lands near 900 to 1,200 USD per person excluding flights, across four nights. We close with a feedback call within a week.

If you go

Island logistics are tight and weekly. The notes below reflect the 2026 operation.

  • Book flights at 450 to 650 USD return early; five weekly departures cap seats and February sells out.
  • Buy the 80 USD park entry before touring; guides cannot enter the two controlled sectors without it.
  • Budget 900 to 1,200 USD per person on the island for four nights, tours, and meals excluding flights.
  • Place Tongariki sunrise on the clearest forecast morning; cloud cover decides the 06:00 pickup day.
  • Carry cash in Chilean pesos; island ATMs run dry on weekends and card coverage is patchy.
  • Keep day five clear until the midday flight; winter schedule shifts move departures by hours.
  • Download offline maps before flying; island data is slow and the ring road signs are sparse.

We open with a walk-through call, lock flights and the park entry, draft the sunrise schedule by forecast, and brief you on arrival. Our line tracks every flight and pickup daily.
