Lima to Cusco in Seven Days: A First-Timer Week

By Diego FuentesApril 9, 20265 min read

Field log by Diego Fuentes, Patagonia and Atacama logistics planner who runs our Peru staging. Times, altitudes, and prices checked for 2026.

Why this route

Machu Picchu through a cloud gap

First-time Peru travelers face one real constraint, altitude, and this week is built around it: two nights at sea level in Lima, one night at 2,792 m in the Sacred Valley, then Cusco at 3,400 m only when the body is ready. In 2026 the Lima to Cusco flight lists at 70 to 120 USD one way on the morning departures we use, and the week totals 1,400 to 1,900 USD per person with mid-range hotels, private transfers, and guided day tours. The route covers the colonial center and food scene of Lima, the salt terraces and fortress towns of the valley, and two full days in Cusco with a Machu Picchu day trip by train. Nothing is rushed past 09:00 starts, and every high day has a rest margin.

We fly Lima to Cusco on the morning of day three and drive straight down to the valley floor, because sleeping low the first high night cuts altitude complaints sharply. The Machu Picchu day uses the 05:00 train from Ollantaytambo, 90 minutes each way at 70 to 140 USD return in 2026, with Circuit 2 entry and a three-hour guided visit. Hotels run 70 to 110 USD per night in Lima and Cusco, 60 to 90 USD in the valley, all with breakfast. This is the itinerary we recommend to travelers over 55, to families, and to anyone arriving from sea level with a tight schedule.

The log: sea level to 3,400 m in a week

Seven dated entries from Miraflores to Cusco. Altitude readings and sleep notes kept throughout.

Day 1 - Lima arrival, sea level

We meet your international flight at Jorge Chavez airport and drive 45 minutes to Miraflores in the evening traffic. Check-in at a partner hotel, doubles 70 to 110 USD with breakfast and ocean-view options from 95 USD. The evening is a slow walk on the Malecon cliff path, 2 km, and dinner in Barranco, about 20 USD per person. Sleep target is 8 hours; the food tour starts at 10:00 tomorrow.

Day 2 - Lima food and old town

Morning is the guided food walk through Surquillo market and three tastings, 4 hours at 55 USD per person, covering ceviche, anticuchos, and lucuma dessert. Midday is the colonial center: Plaza Mayor, the cathedral at 10 soles, and the San Francisco catacombs, 45 minutes underground. Afternoon returns to Miraflores for rest, then dinner at a criollo restaurant, 18 to 25 USD. Evening briefing covers the Cusco flight and the altitude plan.

Day 3 - Fly to Cusco, sleep in the valley

The 08:00 flight lands in Cusco at 09:20, and we drive 90 minutes straight down to Urubamba at 2,871 m, gaining acclimatization by sleeping 500 m lower than Cusco. Midday is lunch in the valley, 12 USD, and an afternoon visit to the Maras salt terraces, entry 10 soles, with 3,000 working ponds on the hillside. Evening is quiet at the valley hotel, 60 to 90 USD, with coca tea and an early night. This low first night is the hinge of the whole week.

Day 4 - Moray, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo

Morning starts at the Moray agricultural terraces, entry on the 70 soles tourist ticket, 45 minutes of walking the concentric rings. Midday is Chinchero market and the weaving cooperative, where natural-dye demonstrations run 30 minutes and scarves list at 25 to 60 USD. Afternoon reaches Ollantaytambo fortress, 2 hours on the terraces, then check-in at 2,792 m. Evening briefing covers the 04:15 train pickup for Machu Picchu.

Day 5 - Machu Picchu day trip

The 05:00 train covers Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes in 90 minutes, the bus climbs 25 minutes, 12 USD, and gates open at 06:00 for Circuit 2. The guided visit runs three hours across terraces, temples, and viewpoints, ending near 10:30. Midday is lunch in Aguas Calientes, 12 to 18 USD, and the 14:00 train back, connecting to a 2-hour drive up to Cusco at 3,400 m. Evening is soup and rest; the body notices the extra 600 m after a 17-hour day.

Day 6 - Cusco old town at 3,400 m

Morning starts late at 09:30 with the Koricancha temple, entry 15 soles, then the cathedral and the San Blas lanes on foot, 3 km total. Midday is lunch at the San Pedro market juice stalls, 5 USD for a large jugo and set menu, and an afternoon rest through the peak sun. Evening is the 17:00 city viewpoint at San Cristobal and dinner near the Plaza de Armas, 20 USD. Sleep comes easier on night three at altitude.

Day 7 - Sacsayhuaman and departure

Morning is the Sacsayhuaman fortress above town, entry on the tourist ticket, 2 hours among stones of 100 tons fitted without mortar. Midday returns for last shopping on Avenida El Sol and lunch, then the afternoon transfer 15 minutes to the airport for evening flights. Total 2026 guided-tour spend for the week lands near 450 to 600 USD per person excluding hotels and the Machu Picchu day. We close with a feedback call within a week.

If you go

Altitude staging decides this week. The notes below reflect our 2026 operating rules.

  • Sleep the first high night in the valley at 2,800 m, not Cusco; it cuts symptoms for most travelers.
  • Book morning Lima to Cusco flights at 70 to 120 USD; afternoon arrivals waste the low-sleep strategy.
  • Budget 1,400 to 1,900 USD per person for the week with mid-range hotels, tours, and the Machu Picchu day.
  • Buy the 70 soles tourist ticket in Cusco; it covers Moray, Chinchero, Ollantaytambo, and Sacsayhuaman.
  • Carry small soles for markets, juices at 5 USD, and tips of 10 to 20 soles per guided day.
  • Keep day five clear around the Machu Picchu trip; the 17-hour day needs the quiet evening after.

We begin with a walk-through call, draft the hotel and tour order, lock the train and Machu Picchu entry, and brief you in Lima. Our line tracks every flight and pickup daily.
