Field diary by Rosa Quispe, Peru and Bolivia planner who also walks our Patagonia seasons. Distances, refugios, and prices checked for 2026.
Why this route

The W trek packs the park's three valleys into 76 km over four walking days, sleeping in refugios so you carry only a daypack. In 2026 a refugio bed with dinner and breakfast lists at 120 to 170 USD per night, and the full four-night W with bus transfers from Puerto Natales runs 1,100 to 1,500 USD per person guided, or 700 to 900 USD self-guided with refugios pre-booked. The season runs November through March, with January winds gusting to 120 km per hour and February the most stable window. We schedule six days door to door: one staging night in Puerto Natales, four walking days, and one buffer night, because one in five groups uses the buffer when the Grey boat does not sail.
Park entry in 2026 is 35 USD for foreigners, valid three days, and the refugio system requires booking months ahead: Paine Grande, Frances, and Cuernos sell out for January and February by September. Daily stages run 11 to 22 km with 400 to 800 m of gain, and the wind, not the distance, decides difficulty. Our routing walks west to east, starting with Grey glacier and ending at the Towers base, so the hardest climb lands on the freshest legs reversed, or so the theory goes; in practice both directions sell, and we pick by refugio availability.

The diary: Puerto Natales to the Towers
Six dated entries from staging to the base of the Towers and back. Wind notes included where they mattered.
Day 1 - Punta Arenas arrival and bus north
We meet your flight at Punta Arenas and load the 14:00 bus 250 km north to Puerto Natales, three hours at 12 USD. Check-in at a partner hotel, doubles 80 to 110 USD, then the 18:00 briefing: pack check, refugio vouchers, and lunch boxes ordered for the park days. Dinner is lamb and calafate sour, about 22 USD, and bags are repacked to the 7 kg refugio limit. Evening wind in town runs a mild 30 km per hour, a preview only.
Day 2 - Into the park and Grey Glacier
The 07:00 bus covers 150 km to Pudeto in three hours, and the 11:00 catamaran crosses Lago Grey in 30 minutes, 40 USD, to the Paine Grande refugio. Midday is lunch on board, then the afternoon trail runs 11 km return to the Grey viewpoint, three hours, with the glacier face 2 km wide across the lake. Wind gusts hit 60 km per hour on the exposed ridge, so hoods stay up. Evening in the refugio: dinner 19:00, bed 21:30, earplugs recommended for the 60-bed dorms.
Day 3 - Paine Grande to Frances Valley
Morning covers 8 km along Lago Skottsberg to the Italiano junction in three hours, with the Cuernos del Paine sharpening ahead. Midday we drop packs and climb 6 km return into the French Valley, four hours, to the Britannia viewpoint under the hanging glacier. Afternoon wind in the valley funnels to 80 km per hour, and the trail crew closes the upper section roughly one day in ten. We reach the Frances refugio by 17:30 after 22 km total, then dinner, an early night, and attention for the knees.
Day 4 - Frances to Cuernos and the east
This is the shortest stage at 12 km, four hours along Lago Nordenskjold to the Cuernos refugio, arriving by midday. The afternoon is rest, laundry, and the balcony view of the horns at 2,000 m vertical relief. Midday lunch is the ordered box, about 15 USD value, eaten at the Italiano junction viewpoint. Evening briefing covers tomorrow's early start: the Towers trailhead leaves at 08:00 sharp for the long day.
Day 5 - Base of the Towers, 22 km
The classic day: 11 km up the Ascencio valley to the Towers base at 900 m, four hours, then 11 km back down, with the final 45-minute moraine scramble gaining 300 m. Morning start at 08:00 puts you at the lagoon by 12:00, ahead of the afternoon wind that roughens the water by 14:00. Midday is lunch at the base with the three granite towers 2,800 m overhead. We descend to the Central refugio by 17:00 after 22 km in nine hours, then the celebration dinner at 25 USD with wine.
Day 6 - Return to Puerto Natales
The 09:00 shuttle runs 2 hours to Laguna Amarga, then the bus 200 km to Puerto Natales by 15:00. Midday is a proper restaurant lunch back in town, 18 USD, and the afternoon sorts gear, showers, and the buffer-night decision. If flights allow, the evening bus returns 250 km to Punta Arenas; otherwise the buffer night applies here. Total trek distance: 76 km over four walking days.
If you go
Patagonia punishes vague plans. The list below is our 2026 working checklist.
- Book refugios by September for January and February; beds at 120 to 170 USD with meals sell out first.
- Carry windproof everything: gusts to 120 km per hour in January make umbrellas and loose hats useless.
- Budget 1,100 to 1,500 USD guided or 700 to 900 USD self-guided for the four-night W with transfers.
- Keep one buffer night after the trek; the Grey boat cancels roughly one sailing in ten for wind.
- Pack poles, blister kit, and a 30-liter daypack; refugios supply bedding, so sleeping bags stay home.
- Buy the 35 USD park entry online before arrival; the Pudeto line moves slowly at 07:00.
- Dry socks in a sealed bag each morning; refugio heating dries one pair overnight, not two.
We start with a walk-through call, lock refugios the day bookings open, draft the route around availability, and brief you in Puerto Natales. Our line tracks every bus and boat while you walk.
