Quito to Otavalo: A Highlands Craft Route

Field log by Rosa Quispe, Peru and Bolivia planner who covers our Ecuador highlands seasons. Roads and prices checked for 2026.

Why this route

Textile stalls under highland sun

The Quito to Otavalo corridor compresses the northern Andes into 90 km: a colonial capital at 2,850 m, a crater lake at 3,000 m, and the continent's best-known craft market at 2,550 m. In 2026 a private 3-day highlands loop with driver-guide lists at 420 to 580 USD per person for two travelers, with hacienda nights at 90 to 140 USD and town hotels at 55 to 80 USD. The route works as a standalone long weekend or as the front half of a Galapagos trip, since every night is within two hours of Quito airport. Market day in Otavalo is Saturday, when the Plaza de Ponchos fills by 08:00 with 500 stalls, and we anchor the schedule to it.

Altitude here is moderate but real: Quito at 2,850 m, the Cuicocha crater lake rim at 3,200 m, and the Mojanda lakes at 3,700 m for the optional hike. We order the days low to high, with the lake hike on the final morning when legs and lungs are ready. Weather runs 10 to 20 C year-round with afternoon showers, and mornings are reliably clear, so viewpoints and markets go before noon. This is also the weaving heartland: Cotacachi leather at 30 to 60 USD per bag, Otavalo textiles from 8 USD, and San Antonio woodcarvings from 15 USD.

The log: capital to market town

Six dated entries from Quito airport to the Saturday market and back. Morning slots hold the viewpoints.

Day 1 - Quito arrival, 2,850 m

We meet your flight at Mariscal Sucre airport, 45 minutes and 25 USD by official taxi to La Floresta. Check-in at a partner hotel, doubles 60 to 95 USD, then a slow afternoon in the old town: La Compania church, entry 5 USD, and the Plaza Grande loop, 2 km on foot. Evening briefing at 18:00 covers the highlands order and market-day timing. Dinner is locro soup and empanadas, about 12 USD, and bed by 22:00.

Day 2 - Old town depth and equator line

Morning is the old town on foot with our guide, 3 hours, covering the Panecillo viewpoint at 3,000 m and the San Francisco plaza. Midday is lunch at the Central Market, 6 USD for hornado and juice, then the 25 km drive north to the equator monuments, entry 5 USD, with the 200 m walk between the historic and GPS markers. Afternoon returns via the Teleferico base for gear checks. Evening is free in La Floresta.

Day 3 - Drive to Otavalo via Cayambe

We depart at 08:00 north on the Pan-American Highway, 90 km in two hours with a Cayambe biscuit stop, 3 USD a box, at 2,800 m. Midday is the Peguche waterfall walk, 2 km return, entry 2 USD, and lunch in Otavalo town, 8 USD. Afternoon is the first market pass when stalls are restocking and bargaining runs 10 to 20 percent below Saturday prices. Check-in at a town hotel, 55 to 80 USD, and evening rest.

Day 4 - Saturday market and Cotacachi

The Plaza de Ponchos fills by 08:00 with 500 stalls, and the morning protocol is fixed: textiles first, 8 to 25 USD per piece, then the food market breakfast of mote and coffee, 4 USD. Midday is the 10 km drive to Cotacachi for leather, bags at 30 to 60 USD, and lunch at 10 USD. Afternoon is San Antonio de Ibarra for woodcarvings from 15 USD, with workshop visits of 30 minutes each. Evening is packing and the market-total tally: most travelers spend 80 to 150 USD.

Day 5 - Cuicocha crater lake, 3,200 m

Morning drive 20 km to the Cuicocha reserve, entry 5 USD, for the 5 km rim-section hike at 3,200 m, two hours with the two islets mid-lake. Midday is the boat loop option, 45 minutes at 8 USD, then lunch in Cotacachi town. Afternoon is the hacienda check-in south of Otavalo, 90 to 140 USD with dinner included, and a rest hour in the gardens. Evening briefing covers the optional Mojanda hike or the direct return.

Day 6 - Mojanda option and Quito return

The optional Mojanda lakes hike leaves at 07:00: 6 km at 3,700 m, three hours, with paramo grasslands and three lagoons. Midday all groups converge for lunch and the 90 km return to Quito, two hours, arriving near 15:00. Afternoon is airport transfers or a final old-town hour. Total 2026 loop cost lands near 420 to 580 USD per person private, or 280 to 350 USD in a group of four.

If you go

Market timing is everything on this corridor. The notes below reflect the 2026 season.

  • Anchor on Saturday for the full Otavalo market; weekday stalls run at roughly half strength.
  • Budget 420 to 580 USD private or 280 to 350 USD in a group of four for the 3-day loop with hotels.
  • Carry small USD bills: craft stalls and food markets rarely take cards, and ATMs charge 4 to 5 USD.
  • Bargain politely at 10 to 20 percent; opening offers sit roughly 30 percent above closing prices.
  • Order viewpoints before noon; afternoon cloud builds over the lakes by 14:00 most days.
  • Keep Quito airport transfers at 45 minutes minimum; evening traffic doubles the daytime run.
  • Confirm market-day dates before booking flights; Saturday in Otavalo anchors the whole loop.

We start with a walk-through call, fix the market-day anchor, book the hacienda night, and brief you in Quito. Our Quito line tracks every pickup daily.
