Why this route

Forced-perspective boot and toy dinosaur

The standard Uyuni expedition runs three days in a 4x4 with six passengers, covering 1,000 km from the salt flats at 3,656 m to the Dali desert and back, and in 2026 the shared program lists at 220 to 280 USD per person with a salt-hotel night, meals, and a driver-guide. The salt flat itself spans 10,582 sq km, the largest on earth, with a 120 m salt crust over brine, and the classic perspective photos work best in the dry months of April through November. January through March floods the flats in 20 cm of water, which trades driving routes for the mirror effect. We stage one night in Uyuni town before departure, because the 07:00 start and the 4,900 m high point on day three punish anyone arriving overnight.

Private 4x4 departures list at 900 to 1,200 USD per vehicle in 2026 and allow the route reversals that avoid the 30-truck convoys at the Incahuasi island stop. Temperatures swing 25 C daily: minus 10 C dawns at the Red Lagoon, 20 C midday on the salt, which makes the packing list the hardest part of the trip. The route crosses the Eduardo Avaroa reserve, entry 25 USD, where flamingo counts at the Colorada lagoon pass 30,000 birds in season. This is a high, cold, long-days expedition, and the log below keeps the honest order.

The log: salt, lagoons, and geysers

Five dated entries from Uyuni town staging to the return. Altitudes and temperatures logged daily.

Day 1 - Uyuni town staging, 3,656 m

We meet your bus or flight in Uyuni town by midday and check in at a staging hotel, 40 to 70 USD, with heating worth verifying before nightfall. The afternoon is the town market and the train cemetery, 3 km by taxi at 5 USD, with 19th-century locomotives rusting in the salt wind. Evening briefing at 18:00 covers the 4x4 groups, the 6-passenger seating order, and the cold-weather layers. Dinner is quinoa soup and trout, 10 USD, and bed by 21:30.

Day 2 - Salt flats and Incahuasi, 3,656 m

Departure at 10:00 after a slow morning, first stop the Colchani salt workshops 20 km out, then the salt-eye pools and the Dakar monument. Midday is the perspective-photo hour on the open flats, 90 minutes with the driver as photographer, then lunch at a salt-table site. Afternoon is Incahuasi island, entry 5 USD, a 45-minute cactus-trail loop among 1,000-year-old cacti at 12 m tall. Evening reaches the salt hotel by 18:00, dinner 19:00, and the stars from the salt-block patio.

Day 3 - Lagoons and the Red Lagoon, 4,200 m

The 08:00 departure climbs south through the San Agustin village to the Hedionda and Chiarkota lagoons, flamingo counts in the hundreds, entry points 5 USD each. Midday is the Eduardo Avaroa reserve gate, 25 USD, lunch at 4,200 m, and the afternoon arrival at the Colorada lagoon, 60 sq km of red algae water with 30,000 Andean flamingos in season. Evening is the basic refugio near the lagoon, minus 10 C overnight, dinner 18:30, and bed with four blankets. This is the coldest night of the expedition.

Day 4 - Geysers, Dali, Green Lagoon, 4,900 m

Wake-up at 04:30 for the Sol de Manana geysers at 4,900 m, the expedition high point, with mud pots boiling at 90 C in minus 8 C air. Midday descends past the Dali desert rock formations to the Polques hot springs, 30-minute soak at 6 USD, then the Verde lagoon viewpoint at 4,400 m. Afternoon is the 6-hour return drive to Uyuni town, 500 km, arriving near 18:00. Evening is a hot shower, a proper dinner at 12 USD, and the warmest bed of the week.

Day 5 - Buffer and departure

Morning is free for the town artisan market, salt lamps at 8 to 15 USD, and the expedition photo exchange with the group. Midday buses leave for La Paz, 8 hours at 20 USD, or Potosi, 4 hours at 8 USD, and flights depart twice weekly. Total 2026 expedition spend lands near 220 to 280 USD shared or 900 to 1,200 USD per private vehicle, plus town nights. We close with a feedback call within a week.

If you go

Cold and altitude decide this expedition. The 2026 notes below are our operating rules.

  • Stage one night in Uyuni town before departure; the 04:30 geyser morning at 4,900 m needs rested lungs.
  • Budget 220 to 280 USD shared or 900 to 1,200 USD per private 4x4, plus the 25 USD reserve entry.
  • Pack for minus 10 C nights and 20 C midday on the same day; layers beat any single jacket.
  • Choose April to November for driving routes or January to March for the mirror flood effect.
  • Carry small bolivianos for lagoon entries at 5 USD each, hot springs, and driver tips of 10 to 15 USD.
  • Keep day five clear for the return drive; the 500 km afternoon leg delays roughly one run in ten.

We open with a walk-through call, place you in a shared or private departure, brief you in Uyuni town, and track the vehicle daily. Our line stays open through the return drive.
